Golf

Caedu-Cottage.co.uk - The ideal base camp for golf holidays

In Snowdonia you will find golf courses which are part of the natural landscape - from links and parkland to hill courses. Caedu-Cottage is within easy distance of several top golf courses. Golfing in this area is a special experience with so many courses to enjoy, all located in wonderful settings with excellent views of the mountains and the coast. Needless to say, Snowdonia dominates the view from nearly every course in the north west but the area's unrivalled collection of castles also contributes to the spectacular background. There's been a course near Anglesey's Beaumaris Castle for a century and a famous one near the classic turrets of Conwy Castle for even longer.
Inland, the beauty spot of Betws-y-Coed boasts a nine-hole course and there is another in the mountains at Ffestiniog. The holiday magnet of the Lllyn Peninsula offers golf of the highest pedigree - James Braid and Tom Morris designed Pwllheli, while Harry Vardon shaped Abersoch. Porthmadog and Criccieth were created by the same influences. The Llyn also boasts Nefyn & District, one of the most beautifully situated courses in Britain.
The ancient Isle of Anglesey was also early on the golf scene with the Anglesey, Holyhead and Bull Bay courses - the last named being a particular favourite of David Lloyd George.
Along the North Wales coast, the elegant Victorian resort of Llandudno is served by three first rate courses while further east the seaside is decorated with long established links at Rhyl, Abergele and Prestatyn.

Fishing

Caedu-Cottage.co.uk - The ideal base camp for fishing holidays

A part from the pleasures and challenges posed by rod and line, the angler based in Betws-y-Coed is given the opportunity for relaxation and observation within valley, woodland and moorland settings of rich variety and considerable beauty. Salmon have bred in the Conwy, Lledr and Llugwy rivers for centuries, but spring running fish were not introduced until 1920, when Mr Connell Smith of Gwydyr Hotel obtained eggs from Thurso in Scotland and introduced them to a hatchery he built on the Afon Lledr. A decade later these fish and their progeny were returning to the river in April and May. The locality's claim to angling fame is in having not only good runs of salmon but also excellent runs of sea trout (sewin); this implies that if river levels are too low or the weather too bright for successful salmon or sewin fishing during the day, there are, at least, reasonable prospects for sewin fishing at night. In the olden days netting was undertaken on the rivers, and coracles were used on the Conwy and on pools in the Lledr and Llugwy rivers, and on a few of the local lakes. There was a salmon trap below Ty'n-y-berth and another a little way above the Black Pool. Both were removed between 1856 and 1866. An unconfirmed, near-record catch with rod and line of an Atlantic salmon was made in 1892. The fish weighed 461bs and was caught on the Conwy river a ½ mile or so north of Betws y Coed.

RIVER FISHING

Rising on the Migneint, the River Conwy flows down through Fairy Glen and over the spectacular Conwy Falls before settling to a gentler pace below Betws-y-Coed, where it is a salmon and sea trout river. On the upper reaches above Conwy Falls there are some wonderful places to fish for wild brown trout. The river Llugwy, a major tributary of the Conwy, is a trout and salmon river.

Anyone aged 12 or over fishing on lakes, canals or rivers in England and Wales , must have an Environment Agency Rod Fishing Licence, available from Post Offices. In addition to holding a licence you must have the permission of the holder of the fishing rights. To check fishing seasons and byelaws, call (0645) 333 111.
